Acetazolamide tablets were initially approved for the treatment of glaucoma by selectively inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, reducing aqueous humor production, and lowering intraocular pressure. Later, they were expanded to assist in the treatment of altitude sickness, epilepsy, and correction of metabolic alkalosis.

2. Indications

Suitable for the following conditions: glaucoma, epilepsy (added when other antiepileptic drugs are ineffective), improvement of respiratory acidosis caused by emphysema, cardiogenic edema, hepatogenic edema, premenstrual syndrome, Meniere's disease and Meniere's syndrome, sleep apnea syndrome (limited to 250mg tablets only).

5. Usage and dosage

According to indications (all doses are for adults):

Glaucoma: Take 250-1000mg orally in divided doses daily.

Epilepsy (Additional Treatment): 250-750mg per day, taken orally in divided doses.

Respiratory acidosis (emphysema), cardiogenic/hepatogenic edema: 250-500mg once daily.

Premenstrual syndrome: 125-375mg daily, starting 5-10 days before menstruation or when symptoms appear, taken orally in a single dose.

Meniere's disease/syndrome: 250-750mg once daily.

Sleep apnea syndrome: Take 250-500mg orally in divided doses daily.

6. Dose adjustment

Adjust appropriately according to age and symptoms.

Elderly patients should start with low doses and closely monitor their condition.

7. Medication precautions

Before and after meals: It is recommended to take it in the morning and avoid urination at night.

Missed dose: Take immediately, skip if approaching the next dose, do not double the dose.

Vomiting: If vomiting occurs within 2 hours after taking the medication, it is necessary to take an additional dose; If it exceeds 2 hours, there is no need to retake it.

Medication method: PTP packaged tablets should be taken out of the PTP aluminum plate to avoid serious complications such as esophageal perforation caused by ingestion of the aluminum plate.

8. Medication for special populations

Pregnant women: Women in the early stages of pregnancy or at risk of pregnancy should avoid using it.

Breastfeeding women: It is necessary to weigh the benefits of treatment and the advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding before deciding whether to continue breastfeeding.

Elderly people: Start with low doses, use medication with caution, and pay attention to observation.

Children: Long term use may report delayed growth.

9. Adverse reactions

May cause the following adverse reactions:

Metabolic abnormalities: hyperuricemia, elevated/decreased blood glucose levels.

Digestive system: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, abnormal taste.

Nervous system: numbness in hands and feet, headache, dizziness.

Skin: photosensitivity, rash.

Urinary system: polyuria.

Other: fatigue, flushing.

10. Contraindications

The following patients are prohibited:

Individuals with a history of allergies to the ingredients of this medication or sulfonamide drugs.

Patients without urine.

Patients with acute renal insufficiency.

Patients with severe liver diseases such as cirrhosis or severe liver dysfunction.

Individuals with hyperchloremic acidosis and hyponatremia/hypokalemia.

Patients with adrenal insufficiency or Addison's disease.

Patients with chronic angle closure glaucoma (avoid long-term use).

11. Drug interactions

Attention should be paid to the interactions with the following drugs:

Antihypertensive drugs: may enhance the antihypertensive effect.

Digoxin preparations: may enhance their cardiac function (due to increased potassium excretion).

Carbamazepine: may exacerbate its toxic symptoms.

Corticosteroids/ACTH: may increase potassium excretion.

Excessive intake of vitamin C may increase the risk of kidney/urinary tract stones.

Phenobarbital and phenytoin sodium: may increase the risk of osteomalacia.

High dose administration of aspirin may increase its side effects.

SGLT2 inhibitors: may enhance diuretic effects.
