Atomoxetine, as a non central stimulant for ADHD treatment, has side effects mainly affecting the digestive system, cardiovascular system, and nervous system. Most of these effects can be alleviated by adjusting the medication regimen or symptomatic treatment. The following will explain from two aspects: common side effects and mitigation measures.

1. Digestive system response

(1) Nausea and vomiting: It is recommended to take it with meals or in divided doses. In severe cases, antiemetic drugs can be used in combination for a short period of time.

(2) Appetite loss: High calorie meals are recommended, weight changes should be monitored, and growth curves should be recorded weekly for pediatric patients.

(3) Abdominal pain and constipation: Increase dietary fiber intake and use penetrating laxatives if necessary.

2. Cardiovascular effects

(1) Elevated blood pressure: Baseline and regular monitoring after medication, hypertensive patients need to control sodium intake.

(2) Heart rate increase: If the resting heart rate continues to exceed 100 beats per minute, it is recommended to consider reducing the intake of caffeine.

3. Neurological symptoms

(1) Dizziness and drowsiness: It is recommended to take medication before bedtime and avoid activities that require alertness such as driving.

(2) Emotional fluctuations: If you experience irritability or suicidal ideation, stop taking medication immediately and seek medical attention.

4. Special precautions

(1) Liver function monitoring: transaminases should be checked before medication and every 6 months. Patients with jaundice should not use it.

(2) Drug interactions: Avoid co administration with MAOIs, CYP2D6 inhibitors need to be adjusted in dosage.

(3) Allergic reaction: permanent discontinuation of medication is required for rash or vascular edema.
