Perfluorohexyl octane eye drops (Miebo) are an innovative artificial tear substitute for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. Their indications are specifically for evaporative dry eye, and special attention should be paid to eye hygiene and dosing intervals when using them. Caution should be exercised when using them for special populations.

1. Indications

(1) Excessive evaporation type dry eye syndrome: By forming a lipid layer to delay tear evaporation and improve symptoms related to meibomian gland dysfunction.

(2) Moderate to severe dry eye: suitable for patients with poor efficacy of traditional artificial tears, it can significantly improve corneal staining scores.

2. Medication precautions

(1) Administration method

Take 1 drop of the affected eye each time, no more than 4 times a day. Blink several times after the drop to ensure even distribution and avoid bottle mouth contact with the eyes.

(2) Combination therapy

When used in combination with other eye drops, an interval of at least 5 minutes is required. Preservative drugs should be used last, and contact lens wearers should remove their lenses before administering the medication.

(3) Special populations

Limited safety data during pregnancy, use with caution during lactation; Pediatric patients should use under the guidance of a physician, and elderly patients do not need to adjust the dosage.

(4) Adverse reaction monitoring

If there is persistent eye irritation or blurred vision for more than 1 hour, seek medical attention and regularly check the ocular surface to evaluate efficacy and tolerability.

3. Common side effects and alleviation

(1) Eye irritation: About 15% -30% of patients experience a brief burning sensation, which usually subsides on its own within 5 minutes and can be relieved by resting with closed eyes.

(2) Blurred vision: The incidence rate is about 10% -20%. It is recommended to avoid driving or operating precision instruments immediately after medication.

(3) Conjunctival congestion: Mild congestion does not require treatment and can be relieved by cold compress if it persists for more than 2 hours.

4. Serious adverse reaction management

(1) Corneal injury: If persistent eye pain or photophobia occurs, immediate cessation of use and slit lamp examination are required.

(2) Allergic reactions: eyelid swelling or rash require antihistamine treatment, and in severe cases, corticosteroid eye drops may be used.
