Betamethasone suppositories (Linderon) may cause local or systemic adverse reactions, most of which are related to corticosteroid properties. Corresponding measures should be taken according to the severity of symptoms, and timely medical treatment can effectively control the risk.

1. Local adverse reactions and alleviation

(1) Burning/itching: mostly temporary, keep the area clean and dry, can be relieved by cold compress. If the medication lasts for more than 3 days, stop taking it and consult a doctor.

(2) Skin atrophy: Avoid long-term use (>7 days), stop medication immediately if skin thinning occurs, and switch to low efficiency hormones.

(3) Secondary infection: If purulent discharge occurs, it should be discontinued and combined with antifungal/antibiotic treatment, such as clotrimazole or mupirocin ointment.

2. Treatment of systemic reactions

(1) Allergic reactions: Stop medication immediately and take oral antihistamines (such as loratadine). In severe cases, emergency injection of adrenaline is required.

(2) HPA axis inhibition: After long-term use, it needs to be gradually reduced and stopped. Sudden cessation of medication may cause adrenal crisis, and physiological doses of hydrocortisone need to be supplemented.

(3) Elevated blood glucose: monitor fasting blood glucose, adjust the hypoglycemic program if necessary, and use this drug cautiously for diabetes patients.

3. Special precautions

(1) Clean the anal area before medication to avoid damaging the mucous membrane and aggravating irritation caused by suppositories. Administering medication after defecation can reduce local irritation.

(2) Risk of combination therapy: Avoid co administration with NSAIDs and anticoagulants as it may increase the risk of bleeding or ulcers.

(3) Pregnant women are prohibited from using it, and the pros and cons should be weighed during breastfeeding. Children are only allowed to use it under strict short-term supervision.

4. Special Risk Warning

(1) Children/elderly patients are more prone to skin atrophy and systemic absorption effects, and the course of treatment should be strictly limited.

(2) Mucosal penetrability: The rectal mucosa has a high absorption rate of drugs, and systemic side effects should be monitored.

(3) Interaction risk: Combined use with NSAIDs may increase the likelihood of gastrointestinal irritation or bleeding.
