Common adverse reactions of esomeprazole include headache, diarrhea, and abdominal bloating; most are mild, but they need to be correctly identified and managed to avoid affecting treatment.

I. Managing headache

1. Identification and observation

Headache often occurs early in treatment and is usually mild. Record the time of onset, severity, and whether it is accompanied by dizziness, blurred vision, etc., to facilitate assessment at follow-up.

2. Symptomatic treatment

Mild headache can be relieved by rest, regular sleep, and adequate water intake; if necessary, analgesics such as acetaminophen may be used under medical guidance, and long-term self-administration of analgesics should be avoided.

3. When to seek medical care

If the headache is severe, persistent and unrelieved, or accompanied by vomiting, visual changes, or altered consciousness, seek medical care immediately to rule out other causes and assess whether medication adjustment is needed.

II. Managing diarrhea

1. Replenish water and electrolytes

During diarrhea, drink water in small amounts and frequently, and use oral rehydration salts if necessary to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

2. Dietary adjustment

Temporarily avoid greasy, spicy, raw and cold foods, and high-fiber foods; choose a light, easily digestible diet and eat small, frequent meals.

3. Medication and medical care

Mild diarrhea can be observed; if diarrhea is frequent, watery, or accompanied by fever, abdominal pain, or bloody stool, seek medical care promptly. Avoid self-use of antidiarrheal drugs to mask infectious diarrhea.

4. Note for long-term use

Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk of intestinal infection; those with recurrent diarrhea should inform their physician to assess the necessity of medication.

III. Managing abdominal bloating

1. Diet and eating habits

Chew thoroughly and avoid overeating; reduce intake of gas-producing foods (such as beans and carbonated drinks) to help relieve bloating.

2. Moderate activity

Moderate walking after meals can promote gastrointestinal motility and relieve bloating; avoid lying down immediately after meals.

3. Observe accompanying symptoms

If bloating continues to worsen and is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, cessation of bowel movements and flatus, or obvious abdominal pain, be alert to problems such as intestinal obstruction and seek medical care promptly.

4. Follow-up assessment

If bloating recurs or affects eating, follow up to assess whether it is related to medication, and let the physician decide whether to adjust the dose or change the regimen.

IV. General principles

1. Do not stop medication on your own

When the above discomforts occur, do not suddenly stop the medication on your own, to avoid rebound acid hypersecretion; consult a physician first.

2. Record and follow up

Record symptom changes and medication times, and provide them to the physician at follow-up to facilitate individualized regimen adjustment.
