Valcyte is an antiviral drug primarily used for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, suitable for specific high-risk populations. Its active ingredient is valganciclovir, which is a precursor drug of ganciclovir and has better oral bioavailability.
1. Main treatment for diseases
(1) Cytomegalovirus retinitis: used to treat CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS.
(2) CMV infection prevention: used to prevent CMV infection in high-risk transplant patients (kidney, heart, pancreas kidney combined transplantation).
2 Applicable Population
(1) AIDS patients: HIV infected people with CD4 cell count<50/μ L and risk of CMV retinitis.
(2) Organ transplant recipients: Solid organ transplant patients from CMV serum positive donors (D+) to negative recipients (R -).
3 Characteristics of Function
(1) Precursor drug characteristics: After being converted into ganciclovir in vivo, it exerts antiviral effects and has a significantly higher oral absorption rate than ganciclovir.
(2) Selective inhibition: Blocking virus replication by inhibiting the DNA polymerase of CMV virus.
(3) Long term maintenance therapy: can be used for maintenance therapy of CMV retinitis to prevent recurrence.
