Rizatriptan is a triptan-class antimigraine drug used for the acute treatment of migraine in adults and is not for prevention.
1. Dosage forms and how to take
Conventional tablets should be taken with an appropriate amount of water and may be taken with food.
Orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue, allowed to disintegrate, and swallowed with saliva; no water is needed. Keep hands dry when handling the tablet, and do not split or crush it.
2. Dosing regimen
The usual single adult dose is 5 mg or 10 mg, per the doctor's prescription.
If the headache recurs after the first dose, take another dose at least 2 hours after the last dose.
The total dose within 24 hours should not exceed 30 mg.
For patients taking propranolol, the single dose should not exceed 5 mg, and the total dose within 24 hours should not exceed 10 mg.
3. Timing of use
Take as early as possible during a migraine attack; do not continue taking after the headache has resolved.
If the first dose is ineffective for the same attack, do not take another dose; seek medical evaluation.
Can relieve migraine headache and associated symptoms such as nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia.
Relatively rapid onset; most patients experience symptom improvement within a period after taking the medication.
Efficacy varies among individuals; some patients respond poorly and need medical evaluation for a possible medication switch.
Only for acute attacks; does not have a preventive effect on migraine.
1. Cardiovascular risk
Contraindicated in patients with ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or uncontrolled hypertension.
Patients with cardiovascular risk factors should have cardiac status assessed before first use.
If chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, or palpitations occur after taking the medication, stop it immediately and seek medical care.
2. Serotonin syndrome
The risk increases when used with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, tramadol, lithium, and similar agents.
Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors; at least 2 weeks must pass after stopping before use.
If agitation, fever, sweating, tremor, myoclonus, or similar symptoms occur, stop the medication and seek medical care.
3. Drug interactions
Propranolol may increase the blood concentration of this product; dose reduction is required.
Separate from ergot drugs by at least 6 hours.
Do not use with other triptan drugs on the same day.
4. Other
Contraindicated in patients with hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
Avoid use in patients with severe renal impairment; consider dose reduction in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
Patients with dizziness or drowsiness after taking the medication should avoid driving and operating machinery.
