Vascepa (Icosapentaethyl) is a prescription grade omega-3 fatty acid preparation primarily used for cardiovascular risk management and the treatment of severe hypertriglyceridemia. Its use requires strict adherence to dosage requirements and attention to bleeding risk monitoring.

Indications for 1 Vescepa

(1) Cardiovascular risk management

It is applicable to adult patients diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or diabetes with ≥ 2 other risk factors, and can reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Should be used in combination with statins as an adjuvant therapy.

(2) Severe hypertriglyceridemia

Used as adjuvant therapy for severe hypertriglyceridemia (≥ 500mg/dL) in adult patients. Reducing triglyceride levels can lower the risk of pancreatitis, but it cannot replace dietary control and exercise therapy.

Medication precautions for 2Vascepa

(1) Dose plan

The standard dose is 2 grams twice a day (2 capsules of 1 gram each), taken with meals to enhance absorption. The whole pill should be swallowed without biting, and if missed, it should be taken at the next meal but avoid double the dosage.

(2) Adverse reaction monitoring

Common joint pain (4.9%) and peripheral edema (2.9%). Be alert to atrial fibrillation/flutter (3.1%) and bleeding tendency (2.9%), especially when combined with anticoagulants, and strengthen monitoring.

(3) Contraindications

Prohibited for individuals allergic to ethyl eicosapentaenoic acid or excipients. Patients with severe liver function impairment should use it with caution as it may affect the metabolism of omega-3 fatty acids.
