Xiidra is an ophthalmic solution used to treat dry eye syndrome. Its common side effects include eye irritation and taste abnormalities, with most symptoms being mild and self relieving. Corresponding mitigation measures should be taken for different side effects, and serious adverse reactions should be promptly treated with medical attention.

Common side effects and mitigation methods of Rituximab

(1) Eye irritation symptoms

About 15-25% of patients experience burning, stinging, or foreign body sensation in the eyes. After medication, close your eyes and rest for 1-2 minutes to avoid rubbing your eyes. Symptoms usually resolve on their own within 5-10 minutes after medication, and if discomfort persists, artificial tears can be used to assist in relief.

(2) Abnormal taste

10-16% of patients reported bitter or metallic taste in the mouth. It is recommended to press the nasolacrimal duct during medication drops to reduce systemic absorption of the medication, and rinsing the mouth or using hard candy after medication can alleviate symptoms. The reaction usually disappears within 30 minutes.

(3) Blurred vision

5-8% of patients experience temporary blurred vision. Blinking several times after dripping helps distribute the medication and avoids immediate fine visual activity. If it lasts for more than 1 hour, medical evaluation is required.

Serious side effects requiring medical intervention

(1) Allergic reactions

Rare but immediate discontinuation symptoms include eyelid swelling, facial rash, or difficulty breathing. Immediately flush the eyes and seek emergency treatment upon appearance, and subsequently change the treatment plan.

(2) Corneal injury

Persistent eye pain, photophobia, or decreased vision may indicate corneal lesions. Confirmation through slit lamp examination is required. If necessary, medication should be suspended and specialized treatment should be received.

3 Precautions for Special Groups

(1) People wearing contact lenses

After dripping, wait for 15 minutes before wearing to avoid the lens absorbing the drug components. Suggest reducing the duration of contact lens use during treatment.

(2) Combination therapy patients

When used in combination with other ophthalmic preparations, an interval of at least 5 minutes is required. Eye drops containing preservatives may exacerbate irritation, so it is preferable to choose preservative free formulations.

(3) Elderly patients

Older patients are more prone to eye discomfort and can reduce the frequency of medication to once a day. Regular assessment of corneal condition and tear secretion function is required.
